How does the model work?
The Hendrich II Fall Risk Model was created from the results of a large, case-controlled study of hospitalized patients. The Hendrich II Fall Risk Model incorporates the results into an effective and efficient assessment. Moreover, the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model is accurate. It is both sensitive (74.9% of high-risk patients were correctly identified in the study) and highly specific (73.9% of patients not at risk of falling were correctly identified). Up to 10-15% of first time fallers fall due to non-predictable risk factors. A successful, predictive fall model should identify and respond to true fall risk factors of the person in real time.
Will the Model work in my healthcare setting?
The Hendrich II Fall Risk Model is in use across the care continuum in hospitals, integrated healthcare systems, regulatory bodies, academic centers and governmental and commercial payers as a valid, reliable, predictive, evidence-based Model to accurately and effectively identify both fall and non-fall risk individuals. The Hendrich II Fall Risk Model was designed to identify individual risk factors related to fall risk and apply the appropriate interventions to the care of the individual regardless of the care setting throughout the care continuum.
Can I modify the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model to better
address the needs of a particular patient population?
No. Because the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model is based on research, using only a part of the Model or adding to the Model will make it less valid and reliable in predicting falls. Resist the temptation to add medications, age or other risk factors to the Model. Care providers often ask why narcotics and other medications are not included as risk factors. The reason is because some patients may manifest symptoms such as confusion and disorientation when these medications are administered. The side effects, of these medications, are included in the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model. In other words, it is the side effect – not the drug – that creates the fall risk. Not every patient taking a narcotic will exhibit side effects, and thus, these patients will not be at risk for a fall based on that one risk factor.
How does the Upright Fall Prevention Program support
the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model?
The Upright Fall Prevention Program utilizes high-quality, CE-approved, online content to the adult learner that supports a proactive approach to reduce injurious falls. The goal is to give the care provider confidence in the ability to identify “true fall risk” from a person-centered care, evidence-based approach and apply interventional strategies that are aligned with the individual in “real time” to help avoid an injurious fall event from occurring.
In addition, the Upright Fall Prevention Program provides partner support to our licensed partners to assist in the implementation of the program and provide additional tools and resources to create the opportunity to reduce or eliminate injurious fall events within their care setting.
How do I implement the Upright fall prevention program in our organization?
To help manage the costs associated with the delivery of our products and services, the Upright fall prevention program is designed to license organizations with a fixed annual rate during the term of the agreement. The licensure agreement includes:
- Use of the research-based Hendrich II Fall Risk Model.
- Unlimited access to CE–approved, online education designed for all care providers.
- Partner support and additional fall prevention resources.
- Pre-built pathway to integrate the Hendrich II Fall Risk Model into your existing EHR platform or Assessment Form.
What does it cost?
The cost is less than the cost of one non-litigated injurious fall event. The investment in fall prevention helps organizations avoid unanticipated outcomes, reduces risk and claims, and helps meet compliance with regulatory requirements and healthcare standards related to patient care. The Upright fall prevention program offers incentives for system-wide agreements to help achieve the goals of utilization and standardization of risk assessment in a variety of care settings and/or patient populations. The Upright fall prevention program can help organizations achieve greater value in the delivery of care to their patients and reduce a facility’s injury fall rate.
